10 Wonderful Ways to Colorize a White-Walled Room

Have you ever been lucky enough to decorate a room that started with nothing but white walls to inspire you? The feeling is similar to the thrill an artist feels with a blank canvas, new paint and fresh ideas. It happens very rarely for me, the blank canvas part. In my business I typically have to start with many existing conditions, like an outdated fireplace, an inherited rug or Grandma's lamp.

White walls can be a great backdrop for big color. Here are some fun ideas to inspire those of you who are staring at white walls and are stumped on where to begin. Trust me: They're a good thing.
1. Go with bold color in lighting. This dining space feels so bright and colorful with really just one color accent and bright white walls. Drama comes in via twin chandeliers in a bold turquoise, repeated in the chairs and curtains.
2. Add colorful chairs to a dining table. This is such a brave yet simple design detail. Fuchsia and hot-pink chairs energize this otherwise neutral room.
3. Let an oversize piece of art steal the show. A color burst of blues and greens contrasts this minimalist dining space in scale and color.
4. Use colorful and boldly patterned fabrics. Big color and scale are right at home with white walls. In this dining space the colors from the art are repeated in the fabric selections. Use art as a palette starter and build from there.
5. Paint an interior door a bright color. I just love this out-of-the-box move. The bright red really pops against the white walls. Oh yeah, while you're at it, use high-gloss paint!

6. Use lots of colorful tile in the bathroom. A colorful accent wall of tile works really well in this modern bathroom. The best tile design is simple and has few transitions; bold color is perfect in this seamless application.
7. Throw in color with a rug or runner. My favorite way to create a palette is to start with the colors in a rug. When I have a room with white walls and I'm just starting to think about color, I will hunt for the most colorful rug I can find. It's a great statement that also feels timeless.
8. Have fun with upholstery fabrics. A room with white walls can definitely take lots of color in fabrics. Natural sunlight helps, too. Select three complementary colors and repeat them in pillows, art and accessories.
9. Play up curtains with color. This is an interesting space that was transformed by the bold-colored curtains. They not only add color, but they also define the style of the nursery.
10. Let the color from the surrounding landscape shine through. If you have bright white walls and no privacy issues, consider skipping window treatments. The surrounding landscape can provide great color and texture, and it's always changing. Just be careful with fabrics exposed to direct sunlight; consider weather-resistant fabrics to avoid fading and damage.
