tofino time

If “trip to Australia” has been on your to-do list since the Sydney Olympics, instead pop out to Tofino this summer for a similar vibe.

Crystal Cove Beach Resort
Might not compare to the Wick, but it isn’t trying to. Pack a group of you into pet friendly log cabins on Mackenzie Beach—many with private hot tubs—that start at $280 in peak season. There’s a full kitchen, propane BBQ, and fireplace, so all you have to do is show up and stop. 1165 Cedarwood Place, 250-725-4213, www.crystalcovebeachresort.com

eat in

In its new, larger location, Breakers Delicatessen stocks high-quality snacks from Leslie Stowe’s Rainforest Crisps to gorgeous flower-adorned Salt Spring Island goats cheese. 430 Campbell Street, 250-725-2558, www.breakersdeli.com

Trilogy Fish Co. is the place to find fresh-from-Clayquot Sound crab, clams, prawns, oysters, crabs and more for your potluck paella. Also try fresh-daily chowder, shrimp rolls and box lunches to go. 630 Campbell Street, 250-725-2233, www.trilogyfish.com

eat out

The menu at the little purple catering truck called Sobo (you’ll be eating outside under canvas tents, on driftwood benches, steps from the beautiful Botanical Gardens) includes Thai Style vegetable slaw, Organic Pinto Bean Burrito, Crispy Shrimp Cakes and Polenta Fries. All tempt, but it’s the Killer Fish Taco, with wild local fish and fresh fruit salsa in a blue corn tortilla, that the locals crave after a day in the surf. Open for lunch and dinner. 1084 Pacific Rim Highway in the Tofino Botanical Gardens, 250-725-2341, www.sobo.ca
