THRILLS AND CHILLS

October 24th, 2008

OCTOBER 24TH, 2008 THRILLS AND CHILLS With All Hallow's Eve just around the bend, we boarded the Haunted Vancouver Trolley Tour looking for a real scare.

And squealer it was, with detailed accounts of local murders and crime scene artifacts. Departing from the Vancouver Museum, the tour takes you to a few of Vancouver's more haunting historical landmarks—like the famed F.L. Baker residence at 3851 Osler Avenue and Mountain View Cemetery. It also provides a chilling and scintillating portrait of our city's darker side, from the unsolved mystery of the Scottish Nightingale to Stanley Park's Babes in the

SLEEP FLIGHT

October 23rd, 2008

OCTOBER 23RD, 2008 SLEEP FLIGHT Between mini bottles of beauty product, fashion mags and our MacBook, there's little space left in our carry-on.

But for the Lug Nap Sac, we'll make some room.

A two-in-one travel blanket and pillow, the compact fleece carrying case (which doubles as a pillowcase) unzips to reveal an inflatable headrest and a baby soft blanket. Did we mention the secret pocket for keeping that precious Blackberry or iPod close at hand?

The peace of mind you'll have saying no to those untrustworthy airplane offerings makes this $28 travel companion priceless.

Now if only

Wednesday, October 22, 2008 CALLING ALL CONTESTANTS We all know that Holt Renfrew has a glorious new locale. But what went in to fill it's Prada shoes?

BATTLE OF THE BANDS

October 22nd, 2008

OCTOBER 22ND, 2008 BATTLE OF THE BANDS Two neoteric pop imports worth their ticket price take the stage this Tuesday. Not the same stage to our chagrin—one plays the Commodore, the other Richard's on Richards—which means you'll have to choose a chanteuse for the win.

In one corner, wearing neon and weighing in with her beat-heavy brand of French electro-pop, is Yelle. Her first album, Pop Up - De Luxe, released just weeks ago is fun, fast and lyrically irreverent. Download the Obsession Remix of her track “À cause des garçons”, which samples the '80s Animotion song (and Fashion

SEA INSIDE

October 21st, 2008

OCTOBER 21ST, 2008 SEA INSIDE That weekend on Salt Spring has us pining for a seaside second address—if only we could shore up enough funds.

Instead of crying salty tears, we're bringing the sea inside with 18 Karat's latest home décor collection, Tafoni.

Named for the circular hollows that form on sea-weathered stone, the collection is a stunning interpretation of the Gulf Islands' rugged and sculptural geology—whether it be vases adorned with glass barnacles ($435), earthenware bowls in organic shapes ($15) or chunky hand-knit throws that evoke nature's textures and colours ($180-$230).

TRESSES? NO STRESSES!

October 20th, 2008

OCTOBER 20TH, 2008 TRESSES? NO STRESSES! As if the bad hair day wasn't torturous enough, the epic line-up at your local java joint meant you went without your recommended daily intake of espresso roast.

Double trouble begone. From now until November 7th, when you pop in to Blo at the Four Seasons between 7-10:30 a.m. for a $30 blow out, you'll also go out with a coffee and biscotti in hand courtesy of Yew Restaurant and Bar.

Coifed, caffeinated and ready to take on the world. Or at least the unruly fax machine.

EASY BEING GREEN

October 18th, 2008

OCTOBER 18TH, 2008 EASY BEING GREEN Do you know a baby who is bound to become vegan by age two?

Get the budding Stella McCartney off on the right foot with B.C.'s new The Eco-Chic Baby where there are vegetable-shaped rattles, surprisingly attractive wool diaper covers (for cloth diapers, natch) and funny wooden caterpillars.

Now all she needs is a “save the baby seals” board game and a green party membership. There's always Christmas…

EAT OUR WORDS

October 17th, 2008

OCTOBER 17TH, 2008 EAT OUR WORDS We would never lead you into a dining faux pas—so we must lead you to Les Faux Bourgeois.

The month-old French bistro has been packed nightly (heed our call: reserve a week ahead) with a cool mix of Main Street mavens and hip empty nesters.

Built by the former owner of Jules Bistro in Gastown (now a Faux Bourgeois partner) the place looks more like an Old Montreal institution, with lacquered wood, a busy bar, and blown glass lights—rather than the Vietnamese restaurant it once was.

The menu is traditional too—think Frissé with lardons, piping hot
