The Controversial House ‘That Changed the Way We Live’

A villa on France’s Côte d’Azur, complete with priceless furniture and interior details, is one of the most significant houses of the modernist era. Yet after a scandal-plagued history, the house was almost destroyed by squatters. And because of old-fashioned sexism and a feud with the man known as “the father of modernism,” its pioneering female designer was almost forgotten. 

A new feature film, along with an accompanying documentary, about the life of Irish designer Eileen Gray not only helped to complete the renovation of this important building but also aims to put the record straight about “the mother of modernism.” The Price of Desire debuted in the U.K. and Ireland on May 27.
