Sunshine Coasting

SEPTEMBER 23RD, 2010

Sunshine Coasting

Hop on the ferry for this weekend itinerary of fishing, feasting and fun.

stay
The Painted Boat’s beautiful oceanfront villas accommodate six, with private decks and full kitchens for salmon barbeques. While the boys fish, the girls can pamper in the large hydrotherapy spa. And don’t miss the resort’s fantastic Restaurant (the free-range bison hails from the owner’s Calgary ranch). The Painted Boat Resort Marina and Spa, www.paintedboat.com

do
Walk the 60-minute trail to the Skookumchuck rapids, a 40-minute drive from the resort. Marvel at a rainbow of sea creatures at the lookout, and pick up a fresh baguette from the bakery at the trailhead. Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park, www.env.gov.bc.ca

shop
Stop at Sechelt’s ReDecor, a consignment shop packed with de riguer British antiques like cut crystal, silver and china teacups. We scored an amazing monogrammed silver foxhunting flask that stands a foot tall—perfect on the bar. ReDecor, 5660B Cowrie St., Sechelt, 604-885-5884.

eat
Missed the ferry? Lucky you! Grab a seat at the communal table at Smitty’s Oyster House in the Gibson’s Marina and order a dozen on the half shell from the lively staff. This fall, look for their new steakhouse next door called Bull. Smitty’s Oyster House, 643 School Rd. Warf, Gibsons, 604-886-4665, http://smittysoysterhouse.com
