A Child’s Magical Fairy-Tale Bedroom
When interior designer Gita Jacobson’s clients asked her to redecorate their daughters’ bedrooms in Redwood City, California, Jacobson went right to the source and asked the little girls for their input. “They really wanted the girls to be involved and to help design it,” Jacobson says. “The girls were very excited and came to me with ideas.” For the family’s youngest daughter, she created a fairy-tale-themed bedroom inspired by the girl’s love of stories. “I wanted her to open the door and feel like she was in her own little fairy-tale land.”

“I wanted this to be her little house in her little land,” Jacobson says. “I came across this bed frame, and not only was it extremely easy and safe for her to get in and out of bed, but it had the shape of a house.” The bed doubles as a place to play or cuddle up with a storybook.

Jacobson covered the bed in low-maintenance, cozy fabrics from Pottery Barn Kids — flannel sheets embellished with a star motif, a jersey-knit gray quilt and whimsical moon- and cloud-shaped decorative pillows. “I didn’t want it to have too many layers or throw pillows, since realistically she isn’t going to be making her bed every morning,” Jacobson says.
A dark blue accent wall was embellished with moon and star decals, a nod to a starry night sky like you’d see in a magical storybook land. “And the twinkly lights were an homage to fireflies and twinkly stars,” Jacobson says. “I wanted her to feel like she was sleeping under the stars.”

Anchoring the room is a bright area rug selected because it looks like a flowery ground cover found in an enchanted forest. “I wanted it to feel like the ground was alive and close to a nature feel without using traditional green,” Jacobson says. The rug is an ideal play surface, as it is easy to clean and stain-resistant and doesn’t shed.
Other decorative accents include navy blue velvet drapes that tie into the soothing accent wall, a plush reading chair, a shaggy pink pouf and a quirky beaded floor lamp. A small book and toy caddy allows easy access to playthings and is minimalist compared with the chunky toy chest.

Jacobson removed a closet with sliding doors and replaced it with an Ikea storage system. The new closet system was gussied up with fun knobs and molding to give it a custom built-in look. “It’s a good way to save some money,” she says.
