Truer Guide

In the gauntlet that is the grocery store, wouldn’t it be nice to take along a guide that’s not swayed by pretty packaging or promises, but gives you the serious skinny not printed on the label?

Enter the GoodGuide. Started by a university professor who, with a little digging, discovered the sunscreen he was slathering on his five-year-old contained a carcinogen, the website employs scientists and product researchers who rate everything from toys to toothpastes based on health data, environmental impact and social factors, like human rights practices. While US-centric, many of the 70,000 goods they grade cross over and more are continually being added.

Also available as a free application on the iPhone, you can search while at the supermarket and feel like you’ve got a little Erin Brockovich in your bag.
